Edible Easter Centerpiece #DIY #Easter
There’s about a month until Easter and some of us are starting to decorate for Spring. Most of us aren’t thinking too much about our Easter dinner table, but if we start thinking now we’ll reduce stress and save money! Now flowers are the centerpiece of choice for spring. Let me give you a few reasons I’m not a fan of floral centerpieces. They’re expensive, they need to be done the day of to be at their best and the scent is distracting from the eating experience (in my opinion). A few of my tablescapes will feature some blooms, but only as accent pieces. Most, if not all of the flowers I’ll feature will be out of my garden; saving me more green!
Today’s featured centerpiece is an edible one (YUM!). I created this with items most of us have lying around and about $10 worth of purchased items.
What You’ll Need
- 3 bags of Easter candy (I used 1 bag jelly beans and two bags egg type candy–$6)
- 2 colors of Peeps–$2 at the Dollar Store
- 2 colors of Easter grass–$1 total at Target
- 1 small short vase
- scrap Styrofoam or floral foam
- 2 mason jars (or even clean pasta sauce jars, just paint the lids instead of using fabric)
- 2 8″ squares of scrap fabric
- 6 wooden skewers
- cello bags and curling ribbon (optional)
- misc. Easter eggs, votives or other type Easter decor
- cake stand
- neutral table cloth
- table runner or place-mats (optional)
How I Did It
First thing to do is assemble the Peep centerpiece. I used a small square vase and inserted a spare piece of Styrofoam. Leave enough room on the sides to wedge in some Easter grass. Next layer in the grass, being sure to cover all the foam. Once the grass is tucked in pour in 1 bag of jelly beans.
Now you’ll want to skewer some Peeps (don’t worry they won’t feel a thing). I put 2 on some and 1 on others. If this is being used the same day or next day the cello bags aren’t necessary. My centerpiece will be sitting a while, so I covered each skewer with a cello bag and tied it off with some curling ribbon. Next stab the peeps into the Styrofoam.
If you don’t have Styrofoam you could layer in a layer of pebbles in the bottom or use 2 bags of jelly beans. Even though the Peeps are light it helps to have something to hold them in place (especially if you have 4 cats stomping around the house.
Next up, mason jars. Fill the jars 3/4 full of grass; it’ll get mushed down by the weight of the candy. Fill each jar with 1 bag of candy. Put the lid on the jar, lay on the fabric and screw on the canning ring. If you don’t have fabric you could tie a pretty ribbon around each jar or decorate it with Washi tape (if you haven’t discovered Washi table yet Google it, right now, it’s amazing).
Now comes the really fun part–decorate! I used a light taupe table cloth and this pretty grey runner. The tablecloth I had, but this runner caught my eye on clearance at Target, just $5.18–I had to have it!
Once you’ve put on your tablecloth it’s about making different layers of interest. Use something tall with something short and fill in any big gaps with Easter eggs, little tins or even just sprinkle some Easter grass right on the table! I used Easter eggs in votives filled with a little extra grass. You could also use single blooms in bud vases, small dishes of candy or tea lights in votive holders.
I hope this has given you a little Easter inspiration. Be sure to stay tuned here at ACS for more great Easter themed tables and sweets.
